What's the Boston Independence Exchange?
The Boston Independence Exchange - BIX for short - falls into a class of events known as Exchanges. An Exchange is a weekend event in which dancers from all over the country and sometimes from different countries invade a particular city in order to socialize and dance with the locals.

An exchange weekend will usually feature 6-8 social dance parties, including afternoon get-togethers and late-nights in addition to the regular Friday and Saturday-evening dances. On Memorial Day Weekend of 2008, all of these social dances will be packed with fun people from far and wide, dancing away the weekend.

What kind of dancing are we talking about?
The Boston Independence Exchange will feature lindy hop, swing, and blues. Blues is a groovy, fun, elegant slow dance done to slow blues music. Lindy hop is the same thing as jitterbug, or crazy swing dancing. So the Boston Independence Exchange features something for everyone.

Is this a workshop weekend? Will there be competitions?
No. There will be no official classes. No competitions. Just dancing for fun, socializing, staying up late dancing, sleeping in, seeing the city and having a great time.

Is this expensive?
One of the main goals of an exchange is to keep cost down for participants. There are also ways to volunteer for reduced admission. See registration page for details.

Why should I participate?
If you live in or near Boston, this is a great opportunity for you to show off your home city to folks from out of town. There are hosting opportunities available. (Who knows, your favor might be reciprocated the next time you travel and are looking for something fun to do.)

It's also a great way to get in lots of dancing very inexpensively, and meet new people. If you are from out of town, this is an amazing way to have an awesome Memorial Day weekend while visiting Boston, home of the Revolution! (Hence the name Boston Independence Exchange.)

So what? I dance all the time anyway - why is this exchange special?
BIX will feature some of the most sought-after bands and DJs all weekend long, like Gordon Webster, Fried Bananas, and Cangelosi Cards, just to name a few. Blues Cafe will run from 9pm till 4am on Saturday night and will feature a midnight breakfast buffet! Believe us, you do not want to miss this event.
